원형체는 탈네모틀 한글의 기원을 탐구하는 활자체이다. 탈네모틀 한글은 음소 문자 한글의 구조적 특징을 반영해 글자들이 전통적 사각 틀에서 벗어나는 한글 서체와 조형 체계를 아울러 뜻한다. 디자이너 슬기와 민이 “폰트 형식으로 쓰인 대체 역사 소설”이라고 부르는 원형체 개발 작업은 탈네모틀 한글의 초기 역사에 관한 호기심에서 시작되었지만, 머지않아 한글 조합 체계의 보편성을 실험하는 방향으로 진화했고, 결국 다섯 가지 굵기와 밑줄 변형체로 이루어진 폰트 패밀리가 만들어졌다.

1976년 조영제가 발표한 한글 타자기 글자 구조 개혁 연구에서 영감받아 디자인된 원형체는, 후대 탈네모틀 활자체에서 더해진 시각 보정이나 양식적 변형을 일체 배제하고 순수한 합리적 서체의 특색을 보존하며 탈네모틀 한글의 이념을 되돌아본다. 나아가, 한글 음절의 초성-중성-종성 구조에 기반한 삼단 격자를 통해 라틴 알파벳 문자가 얼마나 생소한 형태로 그려질 수 있는지도 보여 준다.

원형체는 슬기와 민이 디자인하고 작업실유령에서 100부 한정판으로 발행한다.

원형체를 제작한 슬기와 민(최슬기, 최성민)은 서울에서 활동하는 그래픽 디자인 팀이다. 2005년부터 여러 국내외 미술관, 작가, 기획자와 협력해 출판, 홍보, 아이덴티티 디자인 작업을 진행했다. 과천 국립현대미술관, 홍콩 M+, 뉴욕 쿠퍼 휴잇 디자인 미술관, 파리 장식 미술관, 런던 빅토리아 앨버트 미술관, 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다. 원형체는 슬기와 민이 처음 발표하는 한글 서체이다.

Protoform is a typeface that explores the origins of unsquared Hangeul. Unsquared Hangeul is a category of—and an approach to—Korean typeface design where character forms break free from the traditional East Asian square frames, reflecting the structural nature of Hangeul as a phonetic alphabet. “An alternate history fiction written in the form of a font,” as characterized by its creators Sulki & Min, Protoform’s development began with a curiosity about the approach’s early history; soon, it evolved into an experiment on the universality of the modular system, resulting in a type family that includes five weights and their underlined variants.

Inspired by Cho Young Jae’s 1976 proposal for restructuring Korean characters for typewriters, Protoform revisits the ideas of unsquared Hangeul, eliminating the optical adjustments and stylistic variations introduced in later works while preserving the unique characteristics of purely rational letterforms. Furthermore, the typeface demonstrates how Latin alphabet letters can be reimagined through a three-tier matrix derived from the initial-median-terminal structure of Hangeul syllables.

Protoform is designed by Sulki & Min and published in a limited edition of 100 by Workroom Specter.

Sulki and Min (Choi Sulki and Choi Sung Min) are graphic designers based in Seoul. Since 2005, they have collaborated with numerous national and international institutions, artists, and curators to create publications, campaigns, and identities. Their work is included in collections at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Gwacheon, M+ in Hong Kong, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the Los Angeles County Museum (LACMA). Protoform is their first Korean typeface.
